San Siro to Duomo: Getting to Milan Centre by Metro

Take the M5 to Garibaldi FS, then switch to the M2 (green line) for two stops to Duomo. Route 1: M5 to M1 via Lotto (Recommended)

This is the most popular route for our guests and the one we recommend. Here's the full breakdown:

Step 1: Board at San Siro Stadio (M5)

The San Siro Stadio station is on the M5 lilac line, Milan's newest and most modern metro line. Trains run every 3–4 minutes during peak hours and every 6–7 minutes off-peak. From our apartments, you can reach this station in about 8 minutes on foot.

Step 2: Ride to Lotto (3 stops)

The journey takes you through:

• Segesta: residential area with local shops
• San Siro Ippodromo: the racecourse area and access to the hippodrome
• Lotto: your interchange station, directly beneath Piazzale Lotto

Step 3: Change to M1 (Red Line) at Lotto

At Lotto, follow signs for the M1 red line direction Sesto FS. The interchange is well signposted and takes about 2–3 minutes walking. Board any train heading eastward (towards Sesto Primo Maggio / Sesto FS).

Step 4: Ride to Duomo (6 stops)

From Lotto, you'll pass through some of Milan's most interesting areas:

• Amendola: near the old Fiera Milano site, now CityLife
• Buonarroti: elegant residential quarter
• Pagano: upscale shopping and dining on Via Washington
• Conciliazione: close to Santa Maria delle Grazie (Last Supper)
• Cadorna: major railway station, interchange with M2
• Cairoli: Castello Sforzesco and Parco Sempione
• Cordusio: financial district, beautiful piazza
• Duomo: you've arrived!

Route 2: M5 to M2 via Garibaldi

An alternative if you want to explore the Garibaldi/Porta Nuova area. Take the M5 all the way to Garibaldi FS (direction Bignami), then switch to the M2 green line direction Assago/Abbiategrasso. You'll reach Duomo in 3 stops from Garibaldi.

Milan's ATM public transport uses a unified ticketing system:

What to See Along the Way

The M1 red line between Lotto and Duomo passes through some of Milan's most iconic areas. Consider hopping off at:

Returning to San Siro

The return journey is equally straightforward. At Duomo station, take the M1 direction Rho Fieramilano to Lotto, then change to the M5 direction San Siro Stadio. The whole trip takes around 20 minutes.

If you're returning late at night after the metro closes, night buses (NM1, NM2) run along major corridors. A taxi from Duomo to San Siro costs approximately €15–20.

Many visitors worry that staying near San Siro means being far from the action. In reality, 20 minutes to Duomo is comparable to — or faster than — many central hotels that require walking + metro combinations.
