Why "della Madonnina"?

The derby takes its name from the Madonnina — the golden statue of the Virgin Mary atop the Duomo di Milano. Standing at 108.5 metres above ground, she watches over the entire city and symbolises Milan itself. As both clubs claim to represent the true soul of Milan, the Madonnina became the perfect symbol for their eternal contest.

The Origins: A Split That Created a Rivalry

AC Milan was founded in 1899. By 1908, internal disagreements about the participation of foreign players led a faction to break away and form Football Club Internazionale — "international" precisely to signal their openness to players of all nationalities. From that moment, the two sides of Milan were defined, and the rivalry was born.

Inter traditionally attracted the city's upper middle class and bourgeoisie, while Milan drew a more cosmopolitan, international following. These social distinctions have blurred over the decades, but the passion remains fierce.

The 6-0 of 2001 (Milan 6 – Inter 0)

11 May 2001 — perhaps the most humiliating result in derby history. Milan destroyed Inter with goals from Shevchenko, Comandini (a hat-trick from a player who scored little else) and Serginho. The stadium erupted; Inter fans left at half-time.

The Materazzi Own Goal (2003)

Champions League semi-final, May 2003 — technically not a Serie A derby, but played at San Siro in the Champions League. Milan advanced to the final on away goals in a tense affair that split the city like never before.

The Ibrahimović Show (2012)

Milan 4 – Inter 2: Zlatan Ibrahimović scored a stunning brace and ran the game, reminding Inter fans exactly what they had lost when he crossed the divide.

The 2023 Champions League Semi-Final

For the first time, Milan and Inter met in a Champions League semi-final. Inter won 3-0 on aggregate on their way to the Istanbul final. An agonising night for the Rossoneri faithful.
