The Founding: 1908 and a Name That Says Everything

Football Club Internazionale Milano was founded on 9 March 1908 by a group of dissidents from the Milan Cricket and Football Club (today's AC Milan). The split was ideological: the rebels wanted a club open to players of all nationalities, hence the name "Internazionale." Their motto: "Brothers of the World" (Fratelli del Mondo).

The club's blue-and-black stripes, inspired by the night sky over Milan, became an instant symbol of diversity and ambition.

La Grande Inter: The Herrera Years (1960–1967)

Under Argentine coach Helenio Herrera, Inter invented the legendary catenaccio system and dominated European football. The "Grande Inter" won:

• 2 European Cups (1964, 1965) — back-to-back triumphs
• 2 Intercontinental Cups (1964, 1965)
• 3 Scudetti (1963, 1965, 1966)

Stars like Sandro Mazzola, Giacinto Facchetti, Luis Suárez and Armando Picchi made San Siro's stands tremble with their precision football.

The Drought and the Records: 1967–2006

After the Herrera era, Inter endured a long European drought — no Champions League titles for 45 years. But the domestic scene told a different story, with Scudetti in the 1970s, 1980s and the dramatic 1988/89 season under Giovanni Trapattoni with the German trio of Lothar Matthäus, Andreas Brehme and Jürgen Klinsmann.

The early 2000s brought Ronaldo (the original, R9), Adriano and a string of agonising near-misses in Europe.

The Treble: 2009/10 — Mourinho's Masterpiece

The 2009/10 season under José Mourinho is the greatest in Inter's history — and one of the greatest in European club football:

• Serie A title — the fifth consecutive Scudetto
• Coppa Italia
• Champions League — beating Barcelona in the semi-final and Bayern Munich 2-0 in the final at the Bernabéu

The Treble (triplete) made Inter only the sixth club in history to achieve this feat. Mourinho's emotional post-match celebrations and his departure the following day remain etched in Nerazzurri memory.

Inter at San Siro

Inter moved to San Siro in 1947, sharing the stadium with Milan. The Stadio Giuseppe Meazza — named after their greatest pre-war legend — has been the stage for Inter's finest European nights.

The Curva Nord is Inter's spiritual home within the stadium — a wall of blue-and-black that generates one of the most intense atmospheres in European football, especially during the Derby della Madonnina.

Inter Today

After winning the 20th Scudetto (the coveted "second star") in 2023/24, Inter are back among Europe's elite. The new stadium debate continues, but San Siro remains the Nerazzurri home — and the place to experience Inter's passion first-hand.
