The New Milan Stadium: What We Know
The future of San Siro is one of Italy's most debated topics. Here's everything we know about the plans for a new stadium, the preservation of the old one, and what it means for the neighbourhood.
The Current Situation
Since 2019, AC Milan and Inter have been exploring options for a new, modern stadium to replace (or sit alongside) the current Stadio Giuseppe Meazza. The existing San Siro, while iconic, lacks the commercial facilities, hospitality suites and modern infrastructure that generate revenue for Europe's top clubs.
The Proposed Designs
Several designs have been presented over the years:
The Cathedral (Populous)
Inspired by Milan's Duomo and the Galleria, this design featured an intricate latticed exterior reminiscent of Gothic architecture. Capacity: 60,000 seats with state-of-the-art facilities.
The Rings (Manica/Sportium)
Two interlocking rings representing the two clubs, with a striking visual identity visible from across the city. A bold, futuristic statement.
The Heritage Debate
The project has been complicated by heritage protection proceedings. The Soprintendenza (heritage authority) initiated a process to protect the 1990 additions — the 11 towers and third tier — as works of architectural significance. This has created uncertainty about whether the old stadium can be fully demolished.
Options under discussion include:
- Full demolition + new build: the clubs' preferred option (more space, clean slate)
- Partial preservation: keeping some towers/sections as a monument while building new alongside
- Renovation of the existing stadium: WeBuild (formerly Salini) proposed a complete renovation maintaining the shell
- Separate stadiums: each club building its own venue elsewhere in Milan
The San Donato Alternative (AC Milan)
In 2022, AC Milan announced an alternative project: a 70,000-seat stadium in San Donato Milanese, south of Milan, near their training centre. This "Plan B" put pressure on the joint project but also raised questions about leaving San Siro entirely.

What It Means for the Neighbourhood
Whatever happens, the San Siro neighbourhood remains a prime location:
- If the new stadium is built here: the area gets a massive upgrade with new commercial facilities, public spaces and improved transport
- If the old stadium is preserved (partially or fully): it becomes a heritage attraction — museum, concerts, events
- The neighbourhood's other assets remain: CityLife proximity, metro connections, parks, wellness facilities
