The story of Terme De Montel begins in the 1920s, when Milan's growing bourgeoisie sought wellness facilities to rival those of other European capitals. The De Montel family, prominent Milanese landowners in the San Siro area, commissioned the construction of thermal baths on their estate, taking advantage of natural underground water sources.
The original complex opened in 1928 and quickly became a gathering place for Milan's elite — a place where wellness, socialising, and sport intertwined.
The Golden Age: 1930s-1960s
During the mid-20th century, Terme De Montel flourished. The facility expanded to include multiple pools, Turkish baths, treatment rooms, and extensive gardens. It was one of the few thermal establishments within a major Italian city, making it uniquely accessible compared to traditional spa towns.
The complex also housed a prestigious equestrian centre, connecting it to the nearby Ippodromo San Siro and the sporting culture of the district.
Decline and Closure
By the 1980s, changing tastes, urban development pressures, and maintenance costs led to a gradual decline. The facility struggled to modernise while preserving its historic character. It eventually closed in the early 2000s, and the buildings fell into disrepair — a poignant reminder of San Siro's faded grandeur.
The Revival: Terme Milano
In 2021, after years of planning and restoration, the complex was reborn as Terme Milano — a state-of-the-art wellness destination that honours its heritage while offering thoroughly modern facilities. The €50 million renovation preserved key architectural elements while adding contemporary pools, saunas, and treatment areas.
