The Ippodromo SNAI San Siro (also known as Ippodromo del Galoppo) is one of Europe's most beautiful racecourses and a cornerstone of Milan's cultural landscape. Located in the heart of the San Siro district, this magnificent venue hosts far more than horse racing — from the I-Days music festival to food events, outdoor cinema, and seasonal markets. A Century of Racing History
Inaugurated in 1920, the Ippodromo San Siro was designed by architect Paolo Vietti-Violi with a vision to create a world-class facility for flat racing (galoppo). The racecourse was built on what was then the rural outskirts of Milan, in an area that would eventually become the famous San Siro district.
The original grandstand is a masterpiece of early 20th-century architecture, featuring elegant Liberty-style elements, sweeping curves, and a distinctive tower that remains an iconic landmark of western Milan. The design drew inspiration from the great English racecourses while incorporating distinctly Italian flair.
Over the decades, the Ippodromo has hosted Italy's most prestigious horse races, including the Gran Premio di Milano, the Gran Premio del Jockey Club, and the Premio Vittorio di Capua. In 2014, naming rights were acquired by SNAI, one of Italy's leading betting companies, giving it its current official name.
The venue sits on approximately 160 hectares of green space — one of the largest parks in Milan — with beautiful gardens, ancient trees, and open meadows that make it a cherished recreational area for locals year-round.
Architecture & Grounds
The Ippodromo is widely regarded as one of the most architecturally significant racecourses in Europe. Key features include:
- The Historic Grandstand (Tribuna): A sweeping, multi-level structure with elegant arches and panoramic views of the track. Restoration work has preserved its original early-20th-century character.
- The Tower: The distinctive tower visible across the district serves as both a landmark and a nod to traditional Italian hippodrome design.
- The Paddock: An intimate area where spectators can watch horses being prepared before races — a favorite spot for photography enthusiasts.
- The Gardens: Expansive green areas surrounding the track, featuring century-old trees, flower gardens, and walking paths that are open to the public during events.
Architecture buffs will appreciate the blend of Liberty (Art Nouveau) and rationalist elements that define the complex. The venue is regularly featured in Milan architecture guides and photography books.
Horse Racing Calendar
The flat racing season at Ippodromo SNAI San Siro typically runs from March through November, with the peak season between May and October. Key races include:
- Gran Premio di Milano (June) — Italy's premier Group 1 flat race, attracting top thoroughbreds from across Europe
- Gran Premio del Jockey Club (October) — One of the oldest and most prestigious races in Italian horse racing
- Oaks d'Italia (May) — The Italian equivalent of the English Oaks, for three-year-old fillies
- Derby Italiano (June) — Run at Capannelle (Rome), but many participants train here
- Premio Vittorio di Capua (September) — A prestigious Group 1 sprint race
Race days typically feature 6–8 races starting in the early afternoon. The atmosphere is wonderfully relaxed compared to stadium events — think picnic blankets on the lawn, aperitivo at the track bar, and the thrill of watching thoroughbreds thunder past at close range.
How to Attend Horse Races
Admission to most race days is free or very affordable (typically €5–10). Premium races may charge higher entrance fees. You can purchase tickets at the gate or through the official SNAI Ippodromo website.
What to expect: Unlike formal English racing, the dress code is relaxed — smart casual is perfectly fine. Bring sunglasses and sun protection for summer races. Food and drink are available on-site, or bring your own picnic for the lawn areas.
Events Beyond Horse Racing
In recent years, the Ippodromo has become one of Milan's most important multi-event venues. Its vast green spaces and excellent infrastructure make it ideal for large-scale gatherings.
🎵 I-Days Festival
The I-Days Milano is one of Italy's biggest music festivals, held at the Ippodromo every June. Over two weekends, tens of thousands of fans gather to see international headliners perform against the backdrop of the historic racecourse. Past performers include Green Day, The Killers, Imagine Dragons, Arctic Monkeys, and many more. In 2026, the festival runs June 12–14 and June 19–21. During summer months, the Ippodromo occasionally hosts cinema all'aperto (outdoor cinema) screenings, offering a unique experience of watching films under the stars in this historic setting.

Getting to the Ippodromo
The Ippodromo SNAI San Siro is located at Piazzale dello Sport in the San Siro district of western Milan.
- From San Siro Flats: 5-minute walk — just head south along Via dei Rospigliosi
- By Metro: Take the M5 (Lilla) line to San Siro Ippodromo station — you'll exit right at the venue
- By Bus: Lines 49 and 98 stop nearby
- By Car: Limited parking available on race days; consider using public transport
