Parco di Trenno: Nature Near San Siro
600,000 m² of green space, trails, playgrounds and relaxation — one of Milan's largest parks, reachable in just 15 minutes on foot from the San Siro district.
A Green Lung in Milan's West
Parco di Trenno is one of Milan's largest urban parks, spanning 600,000 square metres of meadows, woodlands and paths between the neighbourhoods of San Siro, Trenno and Quarto Cagnino. For guests staying in our San Siro apartments, it's the perfect escape into nature without even needing public transport: just 15 minutes on foot brings you to an oasis of tranquillity far from the city traffic.
The park is beloved by Milanese of all ages: early-morning runners, families with children, elderly strollers, weekend cyclists and dog owners who gather in the spacious dedicated area. It's the neighbourhood's backyard garden — a green treasure often overlooked by tourists but absolutely unmissable for anyone wanting to experience Milan like a local.
History of Parco di Trenno
The area where the park now stands has a long and fascinating history. In medieval times, these lands belonged to the agricultural estates surrounding the village of Trenno, an ancient independent municipality that was annexed to Milan in 1923. For centuries, cultivated fields and meadows irrigated by the Navigli canal system defined the landscape.
After World War II, as Milan expanded westward, the need to preserve large green areas for the new residential districts became apparent. The park was gradually reclaimed and developed during the 1960s and 1970s, when Milan's municipal government began creating major urban parks in the outer neighbourhoods.
Over the following decades, the park was continuously improved with new tree plantings, cycling paths, sports equipment and children's playgrounds. Today it is managed by the Municipality of Milan and forms part of the broader public green system that also includes nearby Boscoincittà and Monte Stella.
Things to Do at Parco di Trenno
🏃 Running and Jogging
Parco di Trenno is one of Milan's favourite running destinations. The flat, well-maintained trails offer routes of various lengths, from a short 2 km loop to a full circuit of approximately 4–5 km. The mixed surfaces — compact dirt, grass and some paved sections — are ideal for running in every season.
Early in the morning, the park comes alive with runners taking advantage of the fresh air and silence before the city fully awakens. For guests at our apartments who don't want to skip their training during their stay, Parco di Trenno is the perfect open-air gym.
🚴 Cycling and Bike Paths
The park is crossed by cycling paths that connect to the western Milan bike network. From here you can pedal to Boscoincittà, Parco delle Cave and even reach the Naviglio Grande via dedicated routes. If you have a rental bike (the BikeMi sharing service has stations nearby), the park is an excellent starting point for exploring green Milan.
🧺 Picnics and Relaxation
The vast lawns of Parco di Trenno are perfect for an Italian-style picnic. Bring a blanket, some focaccia from a local bakery, fresh fruit from the neighbourhood markets and enjoy an al fresco lunch surrounded by greenery. In summer, shaded areas beneath the large trees offer natural respite from the heat.
The park has benches distributed along the paths and several equipped areas with tables, ideal for those seeking a bit more comfort.
🐕 Dog Area
Parco di Trenno hosts one of the largest and best-equipped dog areas in the zone. The spacious fenced enclosure allows dogs to run freely in safety and has become a genuine meeting point for neighbourhood pet owners. If you're travelling with your four-legged friend, our apartments accept pets on request.
👨👩👧👦 Children's Playgrounds
Several play areas with slides, swings and climbing structures are scattered throughout the park. Anti-impact surfaces and fencing make them safe even for the youngest visitors. For families with children, the park is a precious resource — a place where little ones can run and play freely while parents relax.
⚽ Sports and Activities
The park also offers five-a-side football pitches, outdoor fitness areas with gym equipment and spaces for yoga, tai chi and other activities. In spring and autumn, it's common to see organised groups doing gymnastics or morning bootcamps.
Flora and Fauna
Parco di Trenno hosts a surprising biodiversity for an urban park:
- Tall trees: oaks, plane trees, linden, elms, maples and poplars
- Shrubs: hawthorn, elder, hazel and blackthorn
- Meadows: vast grassy expanses with spontaneous spring blooms (daisies, dandelions, clover)
The park is home to a rich community of birds — blackbirds, tits, robins, woodpeckers, jays and, in quieter areas, you may spot herons and kingfishers near the wetlands. Squirrels, hedgehogs and hares complete the ecosystem, offering attentive visitors small encounters with urban wildlife.
Events and Initiatives
Parco di Trenno hosts numerous events throughout the year:
- Neighbourhood festivals: seasonal markets and fairs organised by local associations
- Fun runs: non-competitive races open to all, often linked to charitable initiatives
- Open-air cinema: free summer screenings under the stars
- Children's workshops: educational activities related to nature and the environment
- Nature walks: guided tours to discover the park's flora and fauna

The Park Through the Seasons
🌸 Spring (March – May)
The best time to visit. Meadows are covered in wildflowers, trees dress in tender green and mild temperatures make every outdoor activity a pleasure. This is the ideal season for running, cycling and picnics.
☀️ Summer (June – August)
Long days allow you to enjoy the park until late evening. Shaded areas become precious during the hottest hours. This is the season for outdoor events, open-air cinema and social evenings in the dog area.
🍂 Autumn (September – November)
Milan's autumn foliage transforms the park into a palette of reds, oranges and golds. Cool mornings are perfect for running, and the golden afternoon light creates irresistible photographic atmospheres.
❄️ Winter (December – February)
The park empties out, offering an experience of almost rural quiet. Clear days reveal unexpected views of the snow-capped Alps. The hardiest runners continue training on the paths, and dogs appreciate the open spaces.

Practical Tips for Visitors
