Getting from San Siro to Milan City Center
By metro, bus, taxi, or on foot — every option to reach the Duomo, Navigli, Brera, and beyond.
One of the most common questions from visitors considering the San Siro neighborhood is: "How easy is it to get to the center?" The answer: very easy. The M5 metro puts you at the Duomo in about 15 minutes, and there are multiple other options depending on your destination, budget, and preference.
By Metro — The Fastest Option
The Metro M5 (purple/Lilla line) from San Siro Ippodromo is the go-to choice for most journeys. Here's how to reach key destinations:
San Siro → Duomo
- Route: M5 to Lotto → change to M1 (red line) → Duomo
- Time: ~15 minutes
- Cost: €2.20 (single ticket)
- Alternative: M5 to Garibaldi → M2 (green line) → Duomo (~16 minutes)
San Siro → Navigli
- Route: M5 to Garibaldi → M2 (green line) → Porta Genova
- Time: ~20 minutes
- Cost: €2.20
- Tip: Porta Genova station puts you right at the start of the Navigli canal district
San Siro → Brera
- Route: M5 to Lotto → M1 to Cairoli (or Lanza)
- Time: ~15 minutes
- Cost: €2.20
- Tip: Exit at Lanza for the heart of Brera and the Pinacoteca
San Siro → Milano Centrale (Main Train Station)
- Route: M5 to Garibaldi → M2 (green line) → Centrale FS
- Time: ~20 minutes
- Cost: €2.20
- Useful for: Catching trains to other Italian cities, airport buses
By Bus — Scenic & Affordable
Several bus lines serve the San Siro area and connect to the center:
- Bus 49 — Runs through western Milan, connecting to the M1 at various points
- Bus 78 — Useful for reaching Piazzale Lotto and points along the way
- Tram 16 — From Piazzale Lotto area toward the city center (a lovely above-ground ride through Milan)
Buses use the same €2.20 ticket as the metro (valid 90 minutes). They're slower than the metro — expect 30–45 minutes to the center depending on traffic — but offer a more scenic above-ground view of the city.
By Taxi — Door-to-Door Comfort
Milan taxis are metered, reliable, and comfortable:
- San Siro to Duomo: ~€15–20 (15–25 minutes depending on traffic)
- San Siro to Navigli: ~€15–22
- San Siro to Centrale: ~€18–25
- San Siro to Brera: ~€14–18
How to get a taxi:
- Call: +39 02 4040 or +39 02 6969 (main Milan taxi dispatchers)
- App: itTaxi or Free Now apps work well in Milan
- Uber: Available in Milan (Uber Black only — no UberX), typically more expensive than regular taxis
- Hailing: You can't easily hail taxis on the street in Milan — call or use an app
Night surcharge: Between 9 PM and 6 AM, there's a supplemento notturno of about €3.50 added to the meter. Sunday/holiday surcharges also apply.
By Bike or E-Scooter
Milan has an extensive bike-sharing system and several e-scooter services:
- BikeMi — Milan's official bike-share. Stations throughout the city, including near San Siro. €4.50/day pass.
- E-scooters — Lime, Tier, and Dott scooters are scattered throughout Milan. ~€1 to unlock + €0.25/minute.
- San Siro to Duomo by bike: ~30–40 minutes on mostly flat, cycle-friendly roads
On Foot — The Leisurely Option
Walking from San Siro to the Duomo takes about 60–75 minutes (approximately 5.5 km). It's a pleasant walk through genuine Milanese neighborhoods — not touristy, just real city life. The route along Viale Scarampo and Via Domodossola takes you through CityLife, past the Three Towers, and eventually into the centro storico.
Walking is best for:
- Pleasant weather days when you want to explore
- Reaching CityLife (just 20 minutes on foot from San Siro)
- Late nights when the metro has closed and you don't want a taxi
